Sanctity of Life

Human life is the pinnacle of creation. It is miraculous, beautiful, and to be valued above all the rest of creation. As such, there is no more deceptive, destructive, grievous evil against the image of God in existence today than abortion. In today’s sermon we will examine the beauty of God’s creation of human of life so that we may all the more comprehend the evil of abortion and how to respond to it.

Tyler’s Main Points

1. Every life is created in God’s image and therefore has dignity and value.

2. Every life begins in the womb.

3. Every life is fearfully and wonderfully made.

4. God is the authority that determines the beginning, length, and end of life.

5. God’s good design is that we would protect and respect every life.

6. God not only gave us a good design for the sanctity of life. He has also given us a Good Deliverer, Jesus Christ.

Key Takeaways

  • Nothing else in all of creation bears God’s image. Every single human life has been set apart as an image bearer of God, making each life worthy of honor, respect and life.

  • God makes no mistakes. Every life is sacred from the moment of conception until natural death– regardless of ability or disability, stage, age, or how/when the life was conceived.

  • Like Cain, we are called to be our brother’s keeper. As fellow image bearers, we are to love, respect, and protect one another.

  • Cultural lies that are creating victims:

    1) It’s just a blob of tissue.
    2) My body, my choice.
    3) Abortion is women’s healthcare.
    4) It’s morally justified to discard a child diagnosed with a disorder or disability.
    5) Mothers who got pregnant via rape are morally justified to abort the child.
    6) I can be personally opposed to abortion and be pro-choice.
    7) Christians don’t care about pregnant women or children once they are born.

  • Life in the womb is not a woman’s body, but a distinct human life created by God– image bearer with unique DNA, its own heartbeat, and equal dignity, worth, and value.

  • Abortion is not reproductive justice, but the greatest injustice in our society today.

  • Abortion has become big business in America. It not only usurps God’s authority, but marginalizes, objectifies, and terminates human life, deceives and exploits vulnerable women, and disregards the potential risks and consequences of abortion.

  • A disabled child or a child with a genetic disorder is still an image bearer of God.

  • Rape does not remove the inherent dignity and value in the mother or the child. Abortion does not heal rape, but compounds hurt and harm. Creating a second victim never undoes the damage to the first.

  • Thousands of pro-life organizations, churches, and families are actively supporting not only the needs of the pregnant mother, but the ongoing needs of the family in meaningful ways. Pro-lifers are prolific adopters, mentors, and advocates.

  • Application:

    1) Pray!
    2) Volunteer your time or donate to support a local pro-life pregnancy center, such as Pregnancy Help Center of Fort Worth.
    3) Consider foster care or adoption or support those who do. Looking for more information? Check out Covenant Kids Family Services.
    4) Vote, call/email your representatives, participate in the political process or local educational boards.
    5) Compassionately share your story.
    6) Teach, train the next generation about God’s good design and the sanctity of life.

  • Full forgiveness for all sins, including abortion, is offered through faith in Jesus Christ.

Discussion Questions/Application

Personal reflection:

  • Do you see yourself as an image bearer of God– someone fearfully and wonderfully? How can you grow in trusting this reality?

  • Do you extend Christ-like compassion to those who have committed abortion, consider abortion, or are promoters of abortion?

Discuss with your community group:

  • How can you as an individual and as a group grow in respecting and protecting the sanctity of all human life?

Are there are any cultural lies addressed by Tyler that you struggle to know or believe the truth of the Scriptures? In love, help each other better understand a biblical worldview when it comes to the sanctity of life.
