The Consequences of Sin and God’s Good Design for Redemption

Genesis 3 is both the historical account of the fall and the archetypal account of every person’s fall since. This morning, we will examine how “the fall” continues to play out in each of our lives and the devastating consequences that result. We will also see the grace of God in the midst of our sin and the glorious plan of redemption available to us all.

Tyler’s Main Points

1. Sin has internal consequences.

2. Sin has external consequences.

3. Sin has eternal consequences.

4. God has a good design for redemption– deliverance through faith in Jesus Christ.

Key Takeaways

  • Sin causes the loss of innocence and glory that is replaced by guilt and shame.

  • Sin causes a loss of joy in fellowship with God that is replaced by fear and hiding from God.

  • Sin causes a loss of peace and harmony that is replaced by self-protection.

  • The response of Adam and the woman to their sin (and often our own response) was to hide, run from God instead of running to Him, make their own insufficient coverings, fail to take responsibility, and pass the blame.

  • There is no such thing as freedom apart from God. If we are not following Him, we are under the influence, authority, and power of the devil.

  • Sin has devastatingly affected man’s relationship with God, relationships with one another, toil and pain in childbirth and work. All of creation has been tarnished by sin.

  • Apart from God’s good design for redemption and gracious intervention, mankind is cut off from God, dead in our transgressions, and deserving of judgment.

  • God pursues us in our hiding. Truly recognizing the weight of our sin prepares us to receive the promise of hope, healing, and deliverance through Jesus Christ.

  • The Gospel not only delivers the forgiveness of sins, but delivers us from the power and dominion of the devil.

  • In spite of our sin, God provides a way back to eternal life through the fulfillment of His promise in the Garden to send a deliverer through the seed of the woman (Gen. 3:15).

  • Through faith in Jesus Christ, we can be reconciled to God and to one another. As our sinless substitute, Jesus bore the penalty for our sins on the cross– that we might experience the fullness of joy found through restored fellowship with God.

  • The right response of the unbeliever to God’s good design for redemption is to receive Jesus Christ through faith. The right response of the believer to God’s good design is to likewise hold fast to the Gospel and draw near to God.

Discussion Questions/Application

Personal reflection:

  • When you sin, what lies do you most frequently believe about God and yourself? What biblical truths do you need to remember to lead you to run to Him?

Discuss with your community group:

  • In what ways are you prone to project a false image of perfection? How can you and your group grow in authenticity, while pointing each other to Jesus Christ your perfect Savior?

  • As God asked in the Garden, “Where are you?” right now in your relationship with Him? Take time to encourage and pray for one another.
