The Mission Of The Local Church

At a time when so many passions and pursuits are vying for our focus, time, and energy, the church’s mission remains unchanged and as urgent as ever. Christ calls us to join the generations  of Christians before us to be and make disciples.

Tylers’s Main Points

  • Our mission begins with being disciples of Jesus Christ.
  • Making disciples requires witnessing the gospel of Jesus Christ.
  • We pray that our mission will include multiplying mission outposts.

Key Takeaways

  • Our mission is clear— to be and make fully devoted followers of Christ.

  • No categories exist that distinguish disciples and Christians. All Christians are expected to be disciples of Jesus. To be His disciple means that we have received Christ as Savior and willfully submit to His authority, life, and teachings.

  • Being a disciple brings a change in your primary calling, demands various costs, and ultimately brings a higher reward.

  • Everyone who answers the call to follow Jesus is answering a missionary call. Whatever context you find yourself, your mission is now to be and make disciples.

  • Being a disciple of Christ may require a change in lifestyle, occupation, playground & playmates, and priorities.

  • As missionary Jim Elliot advised, “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.”

  • Fort Worth may be a churched city, but it is increasingly becoming less of a Christian city. We are God’s Plan A to reach this city with the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  • Our mission is not to just see Christians converted, but to see people live as fully devoted disciples.

  • Discipleship is teaching people about who Jesus is and what He’s done to increase their love for Him and inspire joyful obedience to Him.

  • Tyler highlights three things we must do to carry out the Great Commission:

    1) Adopt a mission mindset instead of a me mindset.
    2) Order our life around the mission of making disciples.
    3) Make relationships a priority.

  • If you’re too busy to be and make disciples, you’re too busy. Relationships are the means through which we pass on what we’ve been taught.

  • We must strive to make room to make disciples in our lives, in our community groups, and in new local churches.

Discussion Questions/Application

Personal application:

  • What opportunities and relationships has God placed in front of you to witness Christ and make disciples?

  • How can you include others or adjust your schedule to better prioritize discipleship?

Discuss with your community group:

  • Discipleship is a costly calling. Why is Christ worthy of your complete surrender to His mission?

  • How are you doing in carrying out Christ’s mission to be and make disciples? What is your next faithful step in fulfilling the Great Commission?

  • Is it time for your community group to add a member(s) or split and multiply to most effectively make disciples?
