Jesus Calls His First Disciples

This week our sermon series The Gospel of Luke, Part II: A Journey through Galilee showcases the power and holiness of Christ through Peter’s miraculous catch, humble confession, and eager commitment to follow Jesus. Likewise, we are to not only embrace Jesus as Master and Lord, but to embrace His call to be disciple makers.

Tyler’s Main Points

  • Disciples embrace Jesus as Master because they see in Him the wisdom of God.

  • Disciples embrace Jesus as Lord because they see in Him the holiness of God.

  • Disciples embrace Jesus’ call to follow Him and fish for men.

Key Takeaways

  • In this passage, Peter chose to follow Jesus even when it contradicted his experience and expertise because he’s coming to trust in Jesus’ wisdom over his own.

  • Jesus doesn’t ask us to obey merely because He said so, but because He has proven Himself trustworthy and has taught the wisdom of God with the authority of God.

  • In whatever trial or temptation we face, we are to ask ourselves, “What would Jesus have me do?” by searching the Scriptures, remember who Jesus is, and humbly submit to Him.

  • Obedience is the only path to true abundance.

  • The miraculous catch inspires Peter to confess his own sinfulness and confess Jesus as Lord.

  • As we see Christ’s holiness, we are to grow in awareness of our unworthiness and worship Christ as worthy.

  • Christ’s plan for evangelism is for us to share the Gospel and disciple others to do likewise and to be disciple makers.

  • The call of Christ is not mere Sunday attendance or the accumulation of theological information, but to follow Christ for the purpose of transformation and multiplication.

  • The satisfaction of your soul is not found in lip service to Jesus, but in full submission as His disciples.
