Jesus Gives Proof That He Is Christ

This week our sermon series The Gospel of Luke, Part II: A Journey through Galilee demonstrates how Jesus’s miracles display His authority and power and authenticate His identity as Israel’s Messiah. Unlike the crowds of Capernaum, we are to respond not with mere astonishment, but with faith in Jesus the Christ.

Tyler’s Main Points

  • Jesus authoritatively declares that He is the Christ.

  • Jesus proves He is the Christ by demonstrating His authority and power over a demon.

  • The demonstration of Jesus’ authority and power over the demon proves His ability to deliver sinners from the grasp of Satan.

  • Jesus proves He is the Christ by demonstrating authority and power over sickness.

  • The demonstration of Jesus’ authority and power over physical sickness proves His ability to deliver sinners from the sickness of sick.

Key Takeaways

  • In this section of Luke’s Gospel, Jesus proves He is the Christ by displaying His power and authority through a series of miracles.

  • Doubt can be used to reinforce faith as we reexamine why we believe what we believe about Christ.

  • Because the demon’s nature is darkness, it recoils at Jesus the Light of the World.

  • In this passage, the evil that we fear fears Jesus. Like a wild dog, Jesus immediately muzzles the demon with the power of His word.

  • As Peter’s mother-in-law finds herself on the doorstep of death, Jesus the Great Physician rebukes the fever and completely restores her to health.

  • Jesus’s miracles pointed to a greater purpose, but most of Capernaum missed it. They were infatuated with miracles rather the Man Himself— their promised Messiah.

  • We can similarly stand in awe of Jesus’s miracles without actually receiving Him through faith.

  • Our rejection or reception of Jesus have consequences in this life and the life to come.

Discussion Questions/Application

Personal application:

  • Reread Luke 4 and preach to yourself all the reasons to worship Jesus as your worthy Lord and Savior.

  • Are there any areas of spiritual lip service warranting your confession and repentance today? Where are you resisting or rejecting Jesus’s call to be Lord of your life?

Discuss with your community group:

  • What evidence have you found most compelling that Jesus is indeed the Christ?

  • In what ways are you prone to be more infatuated with Christ’s miracles or Christ as a means to a selfish end rather than with Christ Himself?
