The Kindness Of The Coming King

As we continue our series The Coming King, the Kingdom era reveals not only the might and majesty of God to overcome Israel’s enemies, but also His loyal love to establish and fulfill His covenant promises. In this week’s message, Tyler Briggs sets our sights on the story of King David’s kindness towards Mephibosheth, the crippled grandson of King Saul. Ultimately, this captivating story of grace foreshadows the most amazing grace of all— the grace of King Jesus.

Tyler’s Main Points

  • Jesus shows you kindness by seeking you while you are lost and saving you into His presence.
  • Jesus shows you kindness by caring for you as a member of His royal family.
  • Jesus shows you kindness by keeping you secure in His royal family forever.

Key Takeaways

  • 2 Samuel 9 highlights the kindness of King David towards the one who stood condemned, Mephibosheth. David remains faithful to his covenant with Mephibosheth’s father and David’s dear friend Jonathan.

  • The Hebrew term chesed is used frequently throughout the Old Testament to describe the covenant commitment and loyal love of Yahweh— reciprocated in this story by David to Mephibosheth.

  • King David takes the initiative to lovingly pursue any survivors of Saul’s family. In doing so, he extends kindness to Mephibosheth, who is crippled, from Lo Debar (meaning “no good thing”), and of seemingly no use to the king.

  • Similar to King David’s grace towards Mephibosheth, God sought us while we were dead in our sins, powerless to save ourselves, and His very enemies.

  • Mephibosheth was sought by the king, saved by the king, adopted as a son to the king, and granted a place at the king’s table.

  • According to Tyler, “A primary cause of our joyless Christianity is that grace has been reduced to a license to live however we want.”

  • Jesus not only saves us, but secures us forever.

  • If you leave the King, you’ll find nothing but misery. If you have left the King, confess, repent, and abide with the King.

  • As God’s adopted children, we must remember the kindness of King Jesus and remain in His presence
