The Well-Built Life

Throughout human history, mankind has searched for ways to stand firm in a world full of trouble. This week our sermon series The Gospel of Luke, Part II: A Journey through Galilee reveals how the only trustworthy path to a well-built life is obedience to Christ and His Word. Ultimately, Jesus’s teaching is not merely a warning of the ruin found apart from Him, but an invitation to faithfully flourish amidst life’s most difficult trials.

Tyler’s Main Points

  • It is a contradiction of your profession of faith to call Jesus “Lord” and not do what He says.

  • The well-built life comes from living by faith in Jesus and His Word.

  • Jesus warns that neglecting to live by faith in Him and His Word will lead to great ruin.

Key Takeaways

  • In this passage we see that the condition of our heart determines the conduct of our lives and our conduct reveals the condition of our hearts.

  • The disciples in this passage were to not only learn Jesus’s teaching, but to live it out.

  • Disobedience is a direct contradiction to the profession of discipleship to Christ. Obedience is the most valid evidence that you are truly a disciple of Jesus Christ.

  • Obedience is the fruit of a regenerate heart. We have been graciously given a new heart and a new Master.

  • In order to have a well-built life that will withstand the trials of this world, you must dig deep to lay a foundation of sincere faith in Jesus and His Word that leads to obedience from the heart.

  • The heart cannot love what the mind does not know.

  • If you want to know the God of the Word, you must come to know Him through the Word of God.

  • The well-built life is to know Jesus rightly, love Him deeply, and obey Him faithfully.

  • The cost of not addressing the cracks in our faith will far exceed the cost of addressing them.

  • In the Christian life, faith is not to be merely a moment of profession, but to be a moment-by-moment way of life.

  • We will not be shaken when we lay a firm foundation on Jesus Christ.

  • The Church oftentimes perpetuates a consumer culture where we are quick to listen to truth and quick to share truth, but are slow to act upon it.

Discussion Questions/Application

Personal application:

  • In what ways are you living as a hearer of the Word, but not a doer? How will you more faithfully live by faith rather than the flesh this week?

  • As you read God’s Word, ask, “How is God shepherding me through this passage?” Intentionally act upon His truth.

Discuss with your community group:

  • What foundations other than Christ are you prone to build upon in this season? Why is Christ alone our firm foundation both now and in preparation of the trials to come?

  • How can your group grow in helping each other to dig deep to assess the cracks in each other’s faith and encourage each other through the Gospel?
