The Love Of God In Saving The Lost

Luke 15:1-10

We continue this week’s sermon series, The Gospel of Luke, Part III: A Journey through Galilee in Luke 15:1-10. In this passage, Jesus illustrates His heart for the lost through the telling of two parables where we see the glorious beauty of the love of God. This passage beckons us to find our rest and peace not in our love for God, but rather in the unchangeable, unfathomable depth of the love that God has for us.

Main Points

Tyler taught this passage by exploring the 5 Glorious Facets of the Love of God.

1) We see God’s love in receiving sinners.

  • The Pharisees were mocking Jesus for sitting around the table with sinners.
  • Luke 5:31 – ” It is not those who are well who need a physician, but those who are sick. I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.”
  • Jesus invites us to His table – for both salvation and transformation.

2) God’s love is seen in His seeking.

  • In both parables, the emphasis is on the one that is lost.
  • God seeks the lost and values each individual.
  • Our salvation is wholly a work of God. We bring nothing to the table.
  • God seeks us through the person of Christ, the Holy Spirit, His Word, and H is people.

3) God’s love is seen in His sacrifice.

  • Jesus laid down His life and then took it up again.
  • We are bought back by the blood of Christ.
  • We are only what we are because Christ was willing to pay what He paid.

4) God’s love is seen in carrying us home.

  • This is a beautiful picture of the Good Shepherd as laid out in John 10
  • We have perseverance by the power of Christ.
  • Jesus is our Great High Priest. The Holy Spirit is our Helper.

5) God’s love is seen in His rejoicing over us.

  • It is God’s joy to save sinners.
  • God and the angels of heaven rejoice over each person who comes to salvation.

Questions for Personal Application:

  • How are you encouraged by the rejoicing that took place in heaven over your salvation?
  • How can you confidently move forward in faith this week knowing that God sought you out, sacrificed for you, and is committed to carrying you home?
  • Take a moment to praise God for His provision through Jesus that you may have eternal life.

Discussion Questions for Community Groups:

  • How can we, as the people of God, join Him in His work to seek out the lost?
  • How can we include others at our table in order to point them toward His table?
  • How has the Lord, our Good Shepherd, sought you out and carried you?

Take a moment to praise God for seeking you out, saving you, and inviting you to His table and faithfully carrying you toward home.
