The Sabbath Of Jesus

This week our sermon series The Gospel of Luke, Part II: A Journey through Galilee highlights the gift of the Sabbath from God to His people throughout the Scriptures. In Christ, we now understand and experience the Sabbath not as merely a day, but a person. The right response to such a gracious invitation is to intentionally draw near to our Savior, in order to delight in Him and receive the satisfaction and restoration that He alone offers.

Tyler’s Main Points

  • Sabbath is for your good.

  • Sabbath is ceasing from work to delight in God and be satisfied in Him.

  • Jesus is our Sabbath.

Key Takeaways

  • As many of us find ourselves emotionally, mentally, and spiritually worn out, the key to finding the rest we all need is Jesus, the Lord of the Sabbath.

  • As Tyler encourages us, “Don’t neglect that which is good for you, don’t neglect the Sabbath.”

  • Four Sabbaths in Scripture

  1. Sabbath at Creation
  2. Sabbath in the Mosaic Law
  3. Sabbath in Jesus our Savior
  4. Sabbath in New Creation

  • The pinnacle of all of God’s creation is mankind. He ordained mankind to find their ultimate delight and fulfillment in their Creator, not creation.

  • The Sabbath in the Mosaic Law served 3 purposes as 1) a special sign to set God’s people apart from the other nations, 2) a special sign to help them remember the God who had delivered them from slavery and oppression in Egypt, and 3) a day to find great fulfillment and satisfaction in their Creator and their Redeemer.

  • If you want to be satisfied in God, stop and set apart specific time to stop and delight in God.

  • What our soul longs for is not found in a day, but a person— Jesus Christ, Himself.

  • The miracle in this passage points to the greater purpose of restoring withering souls to the fullness of life found in Him.

  • Works-based systems of salvation never ultimately provide rest, joy, satisfaction, or salvation. It is never enough and you’re left exhausted. Jesus came to do what the Law was unable to do, save men from their sins and restore them to joy and satisfaction found in Him.

  • When should I sabbath? As believers, we can Sabbath whenever we want and need. At any moment, we can stop and delight in Christ.

  • How do I sabbath? Stop Working. Rest by Faith. Delight in God.

Discussion Questions/Application

Personal application:

  • How will you intentionally sabbath and delight in God this week?

  • Through deliberate study of God’s Word, worship songs, and prayer, specifically reflect on and delight in the gift of Jesus’ all-sufficient, righteous work to save us.

Discuss with your community group:

  • On a scale of 1-10 (1= withering, 10 = thriving), how would you describe the state of your soul? What most frequently hinders you from receiving the rest and satisfaction found in Jesus Christ alone? What is your plan to more intentionally stop working, rest by faith and delight in God?

  • How is Jesus our New Sabbath superior to the Sabbath offered through the Mosaic Law?
